Setting up compost systems

No matter where you are, what your weather is like now, you can set up a composting system. (Even if you don’t have any outside space, have you heard about vermicomposting?)

Composting is integral to a regenerative, conservation landscaping, permaculture, are-you-living-in-this-climate-crisis life. The FDA estimates food waste at 30-40% of the food supply, and the EPA asserts that food waste is the single largest category of waste deposited in municipal landfills, where it releases methane, a greenhouse gas. Production and distribution of food exacts a lot of carbon, too.

Obviously, we have the mandate to waste less food, but let’s compost whatever compostable waste we have. We at Undoing Ruin can help you set up a simple system, like the one in the video, or we can get fancy as we did in the pic below. The client had just taken down a tree, and we took some logs and created a raised garden with an integrated compost bin. Until you get close up, you can’t tell where the compost is.
